WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – It was a chilly but gorgeous fall day for the Mount Holyoke College riding team on Saturday as the Lyons finished as the Reserve Champions at the 2015 Williams College Show. MHC complied 30 points on the day, finishing second to this year's champion, Smith College – 35 points.
Junior Bridget Finnerty, sophomore Mollie Kowalchik, and first year Grace Tice started off the day with great ribbons in open fences. Tice and Kowalchik were first, while Finnerty came in reserve. Senior Genevieve Couldwell had a great ride for second place in the first section of intermediate fences. First year Emma Recchi and senior Laura Von der Porten took second and sixth place, respectively, in the second section.
Sophomore Haley Lamoureux got the large novice fences division off on the right foot with a win, while classmate Taryn Isenburg followed her with a fifth place finish. Sophomore Anna Rzchowski finished second, while junior Cam Carter was reserve in her section. First years Avery Hanlon and Daisy Sears finished the division strong with a first and third, respectively.
Next up was the alumni division, which saw former MHC IEA coach Tara Mathews and recent alum Ila Addanki take first and second, respectively, in both the flat and fences sections.
Open flat saw Finnerty place third and sophomore Maddy Skrak ride to fourth. Tice followed up with first in her section. In the first half of novice flat, junior Sarah Felman rode to a second place finish and classmate Ellie Demmons took home the blue.
The show continued with intermediate flat as Sears placed first and Kowalchik placed fifth with a tricky draw. In the next section, Von der Porten placed fourth. Action returned to the second half of novice flat with Rzchowski placing first in her section, while junior Allee Platanitis and Recchi followed in the next section with first and fifth place, respectively.
In the first section of walk trot, junior Katie Kiefaber placed fifth in her IHSA debut, while sophomore Wendy Ho rode next and placed fifth.
The day rounded out with the walk-trot-canter riders. In beginner w/t/c, first year Tess Ahlers placed fifth in her IHSA debut. Sophomore Morgan Brachfeld placed third and senior Callie Schultz place sixth in the first section of advanced w/t/c.
Following that class, first year Jordan Green and sophomore Cat Lamond place first and third, respectively. Finishing up the show was first year Frances Eisinger and junior Liana Ghiron, who were third and sixth, respectively in advanced w/t/c.
With their first and second place ribbons, Tice and Rzchowski were called back to the arena to ride off for reserve high point honors. A Smith rider also joined them. Tice ended up taking home the honors with a strong ride, while Rzchowski was novice high point rider.
