Riding Finishes 2nd at Zone Championships; Earns Spot at IHSA Nationals

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College riding team saw a number of outstanding performances on Saturday, leading the Lyons to second overall at the Zone 1 Championships at the MHC Equestrian Center. Mount Holyoke, along with this year's Zone 1 Champions from the University of Vermont, advance to compete at this year's IHSA National Championships.

This year's Nationals run from May 5-8 in Lexington, Kentucky.

Open fences opened the day's action as first year Grace Tice and junior captain Bridget Finnerty placed third and sixth, respectively, in the individual competition. In the team competition, Finnerty earned a fourth-place ribbon. Sophomore Maddy Skrak went on to place fifth in the team intermediate fences class after an unfortunate peek at the trot jump.

Our alumni took to the arena for their fences class which saw Ila Addanki and Tara Mathews finish third and fourth, respectively. In the collegiate cup novice fences class, sophomore Anna Rzchowski placed second.

Senior Genevieve Couldwell aced her sudden death round to take the win in individual intermediate flat and move on to Nationals. Alumni flat saw Addanki and Mathews go 1-2 to secure their tickets to Kentucky.

Sophomore Emily Holowczak took fourth in individual novice flat, while on the team side, classmate Mika McKinney was third in novice flat.

In individual walk-trot-canter, senior Callie Schultz had a gorgeous ride to take reserve championship honors and also secure herself a trip to Nationals. Continuing the winning ways was sophomore Sabrina Fox, who brought home the blue ribbon in team walk-trot-canter. Classmate Illianna Termuehlen followed suit and won her team walk-trot class.

To end the collegiate cup competition, Finnerty pulled out a fourth place finish.  This left MHC tied with Tufts for second place with 38 points.  The tiebreaker in this situation calls for the team with the most blue ribbons to earn the decision. By virtue of their three team blues, the Lyons won the tiebraker to move on to Nationals.

In the final class of the day, Finnerty placed fifth in the Cacchione Cup championship.

Final team results are as follows:

University of Vermont - 41
Mount Holyoke - 38
Tufts - 38
University of Connecticut - 26
University of Rhode Island - 25
