SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Behind goals from five different players, the Williams College field hockey team recorded a 5-0 victory over Mount Holyoke College in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. With the victory, the 16th-ranked Ephs move to 9-3, while the Lyons slip to 8-7 overall.
The visitors jumped out to an early lead as senior forward Julia Cochran (Riverside, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) buried a feed sent in off the stick of classmate and fellow forward Meredith Wright (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) at 11:25. Williams increased its advantage seven minutes later as junior midfielder Emma Ticknor (Madison, N.J./Madison) sent a shot in on Lyons goalie Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham). Turner made the stop on a diving play, but was unable to knock the ball away as Ticknor found it once again and lifted it in.
In the second half, the Ephs added once more to their lead as sophomore forward Claire Fitzpatrick (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) found the ball in front of the goalie and drove it home for the 3-0 edge at 46:35. Williams then scored less than ten minutes later as first year defender Kate Gregory (Andover, Mass./Andover) inserted the ball on the penalty corner. The ball caromed out to sophomore forward Simone Veale (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends School), who sent a blistering shot straight through traffic and into the left corner.
First year midfielder Elizabeth Welch (Winchester, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) poked home the final tally of the contest for the Ephs, who saw senior goalie Emma Santucci (Rye, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) earn the victory with two saves in the first half. Junior Abby Lloyd (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) came in to play 27:07 of the second half (1 save), before giving way to sophomore Olivia Dulany (Lutherville, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) for the fianl 7:53.
Mount Holyoke, which saw one of its best attempts come early in the second half as senior captain and midfielder Colby Newsham (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield School) nearly got a breakaway, firing a shot in on Lloyd for the kick-save, saw Turner shoulder the loss with 11 saves over 60:35 of action. Sophomore Maddie Miller (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) came on for the final 9:25 of relief and was not forced to make any stops.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they host NEWMAC-rival Smith in a critical match-up at 2pm on the Turf Field. Williams is back on the field on Thursday, hosting Keene State at 6pm.
