Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 14th



The Lyons suffered a pair of losses last week, falling at Clark (2-1) and Wellesley (4-1). Mount Holyoke is right back in action on Tuesday when it welcomes Coast Guard Academy for a 6pm NEWMAC contests. The Lyons (5-8; 0-5 NEWMAC) will close out the week on Saturday, hosting Wheaton at 12pm.

The field hockey team won a pair of critical conference games last week, defeating Smith (3-2) and Springfield (4-2). Junior midfielder Diana Banmann (Hannover, Germany) scored five goals on the week, including her fourth hat-trick of the season against the Pride. The Lyons (11-1; 3-1 NEWMAC) is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Babson at 2pm.

Mount Holyoke defeated Springfield (8-1), but fell to Babson (7-2) last week. The Lyons secured the fifth-seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament and will travel to fourth-seed Babson on October 23rd at 3pm. The Lyons (6-5; 4-4 NEWMAC) are next in action this weekend when they compete at the NEWITT Tournament, which will be played at Mount Holyoke, Amherst and Smith Colleges. Action begins on Friday and runs through Sunday. .


The Lyons are coming off a busy week in which they defeated Bryn Mawr (3-2), but fell against Coast Guard, Smith, Vassar and Wellesley (all 3-0 scores). MHC (9-10; 0-7) is back on the court on Tuesday when it hosts Springfield in a NEWMAC game at 7pm.

The Lyons then host the NEWMAC/LEC Challenge on Saturday as Smith, Keene State and Plymouth State all come to town. Action begins at 10am (Smith vs. Keene State) and continues at 12pm (Smith vs. Plymouth State/Mount Holyoke vs. Keene State) and 2pm (Mount Holyoke vs. Plymouth  State).

The Lyons returned to action at the 2013 Open New England Championships last weekend. Sophomore Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho) paced the MHC effort, finishing 70th overall in a field of 299 runners in the sub-varsity race. Mount Holyoke is back in action on Saturday when it competes at the 2013 Seven Sisters Cross Country Championship, hosted by Smith at 10:30am.


The MHC golf team wrapped-up its fall schedule in fine fashion last weekend, finishing third overall at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational, hosted by Wellesley.  Junior captain Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif.) and first year June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.) led the way as both finished tied for ninth place.


MHC was near perfect once again last week, winning its own home show behind a number of outstanding efforts. Senior Sam Stone (Stoneham, Mass.) earned High Point Rider honors, while classmate Felicia Harrsch (Lansdale, Pa.) was the Reserve High Point Rider. The Lyons are idle this week, but return to action on October 26 when they compete at the UMass Horse Show.


The Mount Holyoke crew team opened its 2013-14 campaign in style on Saturday as three of the Lyons' five boats in the water finished in the top-10 at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta. Leading the way was the first varsity eight boat, which was seventh of 22 boats with a time of 16:57.509. MHC is idle this week, but returns to the water on October 27 when it heads to Bryn Mawr to compete in the 2013 Seven Sisters Championship Regatta.


This coming weekend marks an annual fall tradition at Mount Holyoke as it hosts Family and Friends Weekend. There are a number of outstanding events taking place on campus for all to enjoy. Highlighting the weekend athletically for MHC is its Inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Seven individuals and one team will be inducted on Saturday as the first-ever class! Among the events taking place that day includes a celebration of the inaugural inductees at halftime of the Lyons' field hockey game. Come out and support the team and also cheer on these fantastic inductees!! Game time is 2pm!
