Michelle Scecina enters her ninth season as head coach of
the Mount Holyoke College basketball team. One of the top coaches
in the northeast, she has posted 99 wins since taking over the
reins of the program in 2004.
Scecina was named NEWMAC Coach of the Year after leading the
Lyons to their first ever NEWMAC Championship in 2006-07. With
their 51-46 triumph over WPI in the league title game,
they secured a spot in the NCAA Division III National Tournament
for the first time in program history. In
2005-06, she guided Mount Holyoke to a 72-68 victory over
perennial powerhouse Emmanel College in the ECAC Division
III New England Championship. With the win, the Lyons
established a new program record for wins in a
season with 23. As a first year head coach, Scecina directed Mount
Holyoke to the NEWMAC regular season title in 2004-05.
Prior to taking over as the program’s head
coach, Scecina served as an assistant for two years (2002-04).
She also enjoyed an assistant coaching stint at Springfield
College, where she helped lead the Pride to the NCAA Division III
Tournament Regional Semifinals in 2002 and the second round of the
NCAA Tournament in 2001.
A four year starter at Springfield, Scecina graduated as the
school’s all-time leading rebounder and also reached the
1,000 point plateau. She was an ECAC All-Region Team honoree
as a junior in 1995-96 and was named to the NEWBA Senior All-Star
Team in 1996-97. After earning a Bachelor of Science
Degree in physical education from Springfield in 1997,
she went on to earn her Master of Education
Degree in health studies from the College in 2001.
Scecina is in her fourth season as Co-President of
the NEWBA and has served as a member of the NCAA Regional
Rankings Committee in recent years.
In addition to her coaching duties at Mount Holyoke, she
teaches many of the badminton and racquetball classes in the
Department of Physical Education. Scecina is an American Red Cross
certified instructor in water safety, life guarding, CPR and
community first aid. She typically teaches the Advanced Beginning
section of the swimming curriculum.
