South Hadley, Mass. - September 11, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College rowing team will return to Boston, Mass. this fall and will compete in the 55th Head of the Charles Regatta® on October 20. The Lyons' event is set to begin at 3:02 p.m. on Sunday.
"We're very excited to be returning to Boston this year," commented head rowing coach at Mount Holyoke College, Seth Hussey. "The Head of the Charles offers a challenging course and a deep, competitive field that provides us with a great short term goal and a measuring stick for our progress as we head into winter training. The energy and atmosphere surrounding the Charles is a great experience for our student-athletes and all the spectators, alumnae, friends and family who come out to cheer us on. "
The Lyons, which will be in the "Women's Collegiate Eights" field consisting of Division II and Division III teams, make their return to Boston for the first time since 2017, when Mount Holyoke College took 24th overall in the competition. The Head of the Charles Regatta®, which began in 1965, takes place on the historic Charles River in Boston, Mass., and features close to 70 races over the course of the weekend.
Since 1965, the Head Of The Charles Regatta® has grown tremendously. Today, more than 11,000 athletes from around the world compete in 55 different race events. In 1997, the Regatta grew to a two-day event and now attracts thousands of spectators during race weekend in October. Support from numerous boat clubs, colleges and universities, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), as well as 1,700 hardworking volunteers help make the HOCR a continued success year after year.
Mount Holyoke College is set to open the 2019-20 season on Sunday, September 29 as the Lyons head to Putney, Vt. for the Green Mountain Headrace.
