BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior attack Elizabeth Ettridge potted a game-high five goals to lead the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a 9-7 victory over visiting Mount Holyoke College on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field. The host Bears even their season record at 1-1 with the win, while the Lyons fall to 1-2.
Ettridge (Marshfield, Mass.) also added four draw controls, while sophomore midfielder Victoria McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) tallied a goal and a game-high four assist to go along with four draws. Junior attack Mackenzie Manning (Hingham, Mass.) contributed two goals and an assist.
Junior defender Lisa Moynihan (Norwood, Mass.) led a solid defensive effort for the Bears. Moynihan recorded nine ground balls, four caused turnovers and a draw control, while junior defender Kerrin O'Leary (Millbury, Mass.) notched six ground balls and five caused turnovers. Senior midfielder Haley Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) checked in with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Seven different players scored for the visiting Lyons who led 5-4 at the break. After the two teams exchanged goals to open the second half, the Bears reeled off four straight markers, including three in a span of three minutes and nine seconds to open up a 9-6 lead. Ettridge netted three goals in the second half including BSU's final tally of the game with 10:13 remaining. Senior attack Leila Kouakou (Leeds, Mass./Northampton) scored for Mount Holyoke with 1:28 left to play to cut the deficit to 9-7, but the Lyons managed just one shot the rest of the way. Bridgewater held a 10-8 advantage in draw controls as well as a 41-25 edge in ground balls.
Senior midfielder Kaitlin Braz (Tolland, Conn.East Catholic), junior attack Deyscha Smith (Boston, Mass./Academy of the Pacific Rim) and freshman attack Meryl Phair (Stockbridge, Mass./Monument Mountain Regional) each finished with a goal and an assist to highlight the Lyons' offense.
BSU sophomore netminder Hayley Barner (Westwood, Mass.) turned aside seven shots to post her first win of the season. Sophomore Mia Wysocki (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) made nine saves in the setback for Mount Holyoke.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday morning at 10:00 AM when they take on Methodist University at SpringFling 2018 in Englewood, Florida. The Lyons entertain Westfield State University on Wednesday at 5:00 PM.
