???CHICOPEE, Mass. (Sept. 19, 2009) – Junior midfielder Alison Couture recorded a pair of goals to push the Elms College women’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory over non-conference foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at Leary Field. Trailing 2-0 in the early going, the Blazers rallied for three unanswered goals to secure their first win of the 2009 campaign.
Mount Holyoke jumped out to a 1-0 edge just 3:48 into the contest, when senior forward Lauren Orr set up first year midfielder Mallory Phaneuf for her first collegiate tally.
The Lyons extended their cushion to 2-0 in the 22nd minute, as first year forward Brooke Winter-Potter used a feed from Orr to net the first goal of her college career.
From there it was all Elms. Couture collected a rebound and knocked in her first goal of the day with just over five minutes remaining in the first frame. She then capitalized off a pass from senior forward Krystyna Gagne to knot things up at two goals apiece in the 52nd minute.
With the match in the balance, Gagne beat Mount Holyoke first year goalkeeper Caitlin Pacheco for what proved to be the winner at the 64:37 mark. It was her second tally of the season.
Elms (1-4, 0-0 NECC) finished with a 20-17 edge in the shot column, but the Lyons enjoyed a 4-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities. First year netminder Molly Corse registered ten saves en route to her first collegiate triumph for the Blazers. At the other end, Pacheco made seven stops.
Mount Holyoke (1-4, 0-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Wesleyan University for an out-of-league contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
