SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Powered by goals from three different players, including a late tally by first year McKenna Lamb, the Mount Holyoke College soccer team edged Wellesley, 3-2 in New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday. The Lyons improve to 7-5-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the conference, while Wellesley slips to 5-6-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the NEWMAC.
Locked in a 2-2 tie following a goal by Wellesley's Maddie Carlborg (Burbank, Calif./Burbank) in the 54th minute, the Lyons nabbed the go-ahead on a nice effort from Lamb (Redland, Calif./The Webb School) with less than 14 minutes to play in the contest.
Sophomore Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain/P.P. Dominicos – Cardenal Xavierre) earned the assist on the goal, dribbling down the left side past two defenders, to cross it into the middle on goal. Lamb, who was streaking down the center after beating her mark, collected the ball in front of the diving keeper and turned for the shot on the open goal (WATCH CLIP).
Down, but not out completely, Wellesley attempted to net the equalizer over the final minutes. In the 80th minute, the Blue saw their best chance as Carlborg tried to head the ball in off a corner, but Lyons keeper and captain Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont./Cawthra Park Secondary School) was there for the save (WATCH CLIP).
Mount Holyoke opened the game's scoring just seven minutes into the opening half after Sanaú Ruiz sent a beautifully placed corned to junior midfielder Suz Rose (South Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Reg.), who was in perfect position to head the ball in past Wellesley keeper Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile) (WATCH CLIP) .
With just over two minutes to go in the half, the Rose-Ruiz connection was in effect once again as Rose sent up a well-placed ball down the middle. Sanaú Ruiz chased it down and with two defenders on her back, fired a low shot into the left corner to send the Lyons into halftime with the 2-0 lead.
Wellesley knotted the game at 2-all quickly into the second half, starting in the 52nd minute as the ball came in off a corner kick to junior midfielder Gen Crotty (Toronto, Ont./St. Mildred's). Settling the ball, she tapped it ahead to junior forward Melise Knowles (Diablo, Calif./The Athenian School), who kicked it right past Marshall.
Trailing by one, Carlborg netted the equalizer just over a minute later for Wellesley. Receiving the ball from first year forward Julia Jung (Oakland, Calif./Bently School), Carlborg got past her defender with a spin move and fired off a shot from the right side and in.
Marshall picked up the victory for the Lyons, posting three stops on the afternoon. For Wellesley, Reckley suffered the loss and had two saves.
Mount Holyoke will be on the road for the next two games, beginning with Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday, at 7:00pm. Wellesley will also be in action on Tuesday, heading to Cambridge to face MIT at 4:00pm.
