SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Engineers of WPI defeated the Mount Holyoke College, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in NEWMAC (New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference) soccer action. With the win the Engineers improve to 9-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference, while the Lyons fall to 2-10-1 overall and 0-5-0 in NEWMAC action.
WPI was led by senior captain Sophie Gomarlo, who scored three points on a first half goal and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, Mass./Notre Dame (H)) also scored a goal, while senior Mari Bailey (North Providence, R.I./Bay View Academy) recorded an assist.
In net for the Lyons, junior goal keeper Amanda Manaster (Beverly Hills, Calif./Beverly Hills) led the game in saves with eight, taking on 10 shots through 90:00 minutes. Mount Holyoke owned the advantage in corner kick attempts in the second half by a 1-0 margin.
With 15th minute of the match, Bailey sprinted down the right side of the field past a pair of MHC defenders. Bailey then passed it forward to Gomarlo, who was sitting at the top of the box. She then took two dribbles and launched a shot outside Manaster's reach to go up 1-0 in the contest.
In the second half, Bailey was the helper as she fed the ball to McCrea from the right side of the field. McCrea dribbled laterally and sunk a shot from deep middle field to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
The Lyons had its best chance to score with just over six in the second half when senior captain Suz Rose (South Hamilton, mass./Hamilton-Wenham Reg.) received the ball with space 25 yards out from goal. Rose gathered control of the ball and fired a shot on goal, but junior keeper Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, Conn./Stonington) was there for the save.
WPI maintained control for the rest of the half to take the win.
WPI will be on the road to face NEWMAC opponent Wheaton at 4:00pm on Tuesday. Mount Holyoke will also hit the road for a conference bout against RPI on Wednesday.
