CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team concluded action at the 2018 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships on Sunday. Through 39 events, the Lyons finished the event in eighth overall.
Action opened with the gruelling 1650-yard freestyle, which saw rookie Ashton Bliss place 14th overall with a time of 18:37.37. Sophomore Natalie Burkett was 22nd in the same event with a time of 19:27.16.
In the 200-yard backstroke, MHC saw senior captain Claire Beckett finish just one spot shy of the consolation finals, taking 21st overall with a time of 2:16.47. Junior and fellow captain Delany Berry also competed in the 200-back, placing 31st with a time of 2:22.13.
Junior Bri Groves then took to action in the consolation finals of the 200-yard breaststroke, placing 20th overall with a time of 2:37.05. The 200-yard butterfly was next as rookie Naomi Brown finished 18th (2:16.53), while Bliss was 20th (2:19.70) as both earned points in the consolation final.
The meet concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay as the foursome of rookie Tamara Mukulu, Brown, Hicks and Beckett earned ninth overall in the championship final with a time of 3:46.72.
MIT captured victory once again at this year's event, earning 1,314 points to best Wheaton, which was second with 1,002 points. Springfield was third with 795.5 points, followed by WPI (721) and Coast Guard (575.5) to round out the top five. Wellesley earned sixth (449), while Smith was seventh (261). Clark (230) and Babson (203) followed the Lyons in ninth and tenth, respectively.
The NEWMAC Championships concluded the team's schedule for 2017-18, but Nemivant returns to action on Friday (3/2) and Saturday (3/3) at the NCAA Division III Diving Regionals. Action will take place on the campus of Middlebury College.
