SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 20, 2008) - Three Mount Holyoke College women's tennis team tandems competed in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) over the weekend. The three day tournament took place on the campuses of Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke and Smith College. In each round, the duos played one doubles and two singles matches against their opponents. The Lyons number one and two squads each advanced to the semifinal round of the Flight "A" First Round Consolation bracket.
Senior Ashley Fallon and sophomore Elise Marifian made up Mount Holyoke's number one team. They were joined by the Lyons number two squad of juniors Sarah London and Beatrix Hartmann in the Gail Smith Flight "A" Draw. Both duos opened the weekend with setbacks in their first matches. After receiving a bye in the first round, Fallon and Marifian dropped a 2-1 decision in their round of 32 contest versus the number one tandem from Suffolk University. Meanwhile, London and Hartmann were upended 3-0 by Middlebury College's number three team in the round of 64. As a result, both squads were sent to the Flight "A" First Round Consolation bracket.
Fallon and Marifian were given a free pass to the quarterfinal round, where they blanked Salve Regina University's number one pair 3-0 to punch their ticket to the semifinals. London and Hartmann needed to win two matches to move on to the semifinals. In their round of 16 tilt, they posted a 3-0 win over Colby College's number two team. They followed that with a 3-0 triumph over Connecticut College's number two squad in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, both Mount Holyoke teams met up with tandems from Bates College. Fallon and Marifian fell 3-0 to the Bobcats number two duo, while London and Hartmann dropped a 2-0 decision to their number one squad.
Sophomore Natalie Hsiang and first year Heather Richardson made up the Lyons number three entrant, which competed in the Chris Davis Flight "B" Draw. After falling 3-0 versus Tufts University's number three pair in the round of 64, they were placed in the Flight "B" First Round Consolation draw. Hsiang and Richardson grabbed a 3-0 win over the Simmons College number three team in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinal round. In the quarterfinals, junior Rose Cantlin replaced Hsiang. Richardson and Cantlin fell 2-1 to Smith College's number four tandem, putting an end to their weekend.
The fourth seeded Lyons will face off against fifth seeded Babson College in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2008 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Semifinal and Championship rounds will take place on Sunday. Mount Holyoke is slated to host the entire tournament.
