MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Amid chilly and windy conditions, the Mount Holyoke College track & field team opened their outdoor season in fine fashion with a number of outstanding efforts at the Wesleyan Spring Classic.
In the 100-meter dash, sophomore Isabelle Wohlin paced the efforts, earning third overall with a personal record mark of 13.05. She followed that up with a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash, notching another personal-best with a mark of 27.24. Other highlights in the 200 included sophomore Tamara Mukulu, who was ninth with a personal record 27.62.
Rookie Margaret Robb took 19th in the 200 with a season-best time of 29.62, while classmate Michaela Phelan was 21st with a personal-best time of 30.10. Rounding out the action in the 200 was first year Leah Pendl-Robinson, who was 25th in the event with a personal record time of 30.41.
The 400-meter dash saw Phelan place 10th overall with a personal-best time of 1:08.00, while the Lyons were strong in the 800-meter run. Pacing the event was rookie Sydney Nash, who won with a season-best time of 2:33.43. Senior Emsie Cronin took fifth overall with a season-best mark of 2:41.83, while rookie Natalie Rodman was eighth overall with a time of 2:49.20 - another personal record. Rookie Charlotte Lindblom tacked on a season-best time of her own in the 800 with a 2:57.57.
Nash went on to earn 10th in the 1500-meter run, notching another personal record with a time of 5:13.13. Cronin was 23rd with a season-best time of 5:29.32, while rookie Sarah Hyde put up a personal-best time of her own in 27th with a 5:40.60. Rodman ran to 34th overall with a time of 5:50.55 - another personal best - while rookie Sammi Craig was 36th with a personal record time of 5:52.04.
Victory came once again in the 5,000-meter run as sophomore Hannah Rieders won with a season-best time of 18:51.97. Her sister, Madeline Rieders took second with a season-high time of 18:52.11. Senior Hannah Gershone notched a season-best time of 19:37.04 in the 5,000 to take fifth, while rookie Jamie Day was ninth, notching a personal record time of 19:55.11.
Other solid efforts in the event included rookie Sophia Gronbeck, who earned a season-best time of 21:16.28 to take 15th. Classmate Amanda Kearney was 16th with a time of 21:33.37, while sophomore Olivia Wrobleski had a season-best time of 22:32.81. In the 10,000 meter run, rookie Sophia Anderson notched a personal record time of 44:35.31 to round out the running events.
In the field action, Pendl-Robinson was fifth overall in the pole vault, recording a personal record height of 2.35 meters (7-08.50). The triple jump saw Wohlin notch a season-best distance of 9.83 meters (32-03.00) to take third, while in the discus throw, senior Julia Hecking posted a mark of 27.71 meters (90-11) to place sixth. She then posted ninth in the hammer throw with a season-best distance of 33.94 meters.
Sophomore Ireland Clare Kennedy rounded out the day's action in the javelin throw, notching a season-best distance of 26.40 meters (86-07) to earn sixth.
Mount Holyoke returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Tufts University to take part in the Snowflake Classic.
