Basketball Defeats Amherst, Silvey Hits 1,000

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior guard Joeanna Silvey (Boston, Mass.) netted 23 points to lead Mount Holyoke (2-1) past Amherst College (1-2), 58-54. Silvey scored her 1,000th career point in the process, sinking two free throws with 9:50 remaining to hit the milestone.
Amherst built a 12-4 run to start the game, but the Lyons rallied back and gained their first lead with 6:24 to go in the half, 18-17. MHC closed out the half with a 10-2 run to lead by six at the break, 25-19.
The Lord Jeffs completed another 12-4 stint to start the second half, surging ahead, 31-29, in the first three minutes. The Lyons regained the momentum and took a 33-31 lead with 10:39 to go, a lead they would never relinquish. At the 9:50 mark, Silvey dropped in two free throws for the career milestone and a four-point Lyons' lead. Amherst battled hard in the final moments of the game, narrowing its deficit to one point on a Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, Ill.) three-pointer, but Mount Holyoke made their free throws down the stretch to ice a 58-54 win.
Silvey led all scorers with 23 points, including 3-for-4 from long range and 6-for-7 from the free throw line. She also tied a game-high 10 rebounds and tallied four assists and four steals for the night. Jessica Olson (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Angela Astuccio (Foxboro, Mass.) contributed 10 points apiece for MHC. For Amherst, Ann-Claire Roesch (Westport, Conn.) sank 15 points while Reiff totaled 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Mount Holyoke returns from Thanksgiving break to host Elms College on Tuesday, November 28 at 7:00 p.m.
