Basketball Grabs Fifth-Consecutive Seven Sisters Tournament Championship
HAVERFORD, Pa. (December 3, 2006) - Top-seeded Mount Holyoke College went up 40-24 on second-seeded Swarthmore at the half en route to a 71-50 win Sunday afternoon in the championship contest of the 2006 Seven Sisters Basketball Tournament. Lyons' senior guard, and Seven Sisters Tournament Defensive Most Valuable Player, Joeanna Silvey led Mount Holyoke with 20 points on eight-of-13 shooting from the floor, eight steals, seven assists and seven rebounds performance.
Also leading the Lyons effort to the Seven Sisters championship was first-year All-Tournament forward Jessica Olson, who collected a game-high 19 rebounds along with 15 points and two assists. MHC's Erin Cain '10 and Marisa Barone '08 each contributed 11 points in the win. Senior guard Angela Astuccio, Seven Sisters Tournament MVP, recorded nine points and three rebounds in the championship win.
Swarthmore was led by sophomore guard Melissa Grigsby, who totaled 13 points, and All-Tournament junior forward Karen Berk who chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds. Swarthmore forward Pamela Costello also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
This was the fourth consecutive season that Mount Holyoke topped Swarthmore for the Seven Sisters championship, and the fifth consecutive title for the Lyons.
The Lyons return to action next Saturday, September 9th, when they travel to Worcester State. The game begins at 2:00 p.m.
