Basketball Beats Coast Guard, 65-55
NEW LONDON, Conn. (February 7, 2007) - Mount Holyoke saw Coast Guard cut a 21 point lead down to five, but the Lyons finished eight-of-eight from the foul line in the final 35.4 seconds to win the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game, 65-55.
Mount Holyoke used a 23-3 spurt as they outscored Coast Guard 13-3 over the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 24-13 lead at halftime before scoring the first 10 points of the second half to lead 34-13 with 16:22 left.
Coast Guard (12-10, 5-5 NEWMAC)) wouldn't go quietly as they used an 18-8 spurt to cut the lead to 42-31 with 8:11 left. Corinne McCormack hit a three-pointer with 4:30 left to pull the Bears to within five at 52-47. The Lyons (15-7, 7-3 NEWMAC) led 56-51 with 1:13 left before hitting nine of 10 foul shots including the final eight for the win.
Senior guard Joeanna Silvey had a game-high 18 points to lead Mount Holyoke. First year forward Jessica Olson had 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds and junior forward Marisa Barone had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Lyons.
Natalie Moyer led Coast Guard with 16 points and a game-high seven steals while Corinne McCormack (14), Melissa Martinelli (13) and DeCarol Davis (10) also scored in double figures for the Bears. Martinelli led Coast Guard with nine rebounds.
The Lyons return to action this Saturday when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to face MIT at 1:00 p.m.
