NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Feb. 18, 2012) –Led by senior Jacinta Edebeli, the Mount Holyoke College indoor track and field team grabbed 22nd place at the New England Division III Championships this weekend. The two-day competition took place at Smith College and included the top individuals from around the region.
Edebeli opened the weekend with an outstanding showing in the pentathlon yesterday. Her top performance came in the shot put, where she secured first place with a toss of 12.10 meters. In the process, she broke her own program record of 12.05 meters. The senior also collected 12th place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37.90. Her total score of 2,667 points was good for 14th place overall.
The competition concluded today with a full slate of events. Edebeli was once again impressive, taking eighth place in the shot put with a distance of 12.00 meters. By doing so, she earned All-Region honors and accounted for Mount Holyoke's lone point.
Fellow senior Miriam Larson-Koester also participated in the shot put, earning ninth place with a toss of 11.54 meters. She will represent the Lyons at the ECAC Division III Championships in two weeks. The event is slated to take place at the New Balance Armory in New York City on March 2 and 3. Edebeli also qualified but will be unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict.
Mount Holyoke's third competitor today was sophomore Naomi Miller, who completed the 800-meter run in 2:27.24 to earn 15th place.
Williams College took home the team title with a score of 143. The Ephs narrowly edged out MIT (142), while Bowdoin College (72), Tufts University (64) and Middlebury College (58) rounded out the top five.
