The Mount Holyoke cross country program entered into a new era in 2009, as Beth Somerset took over as head coach. Under her direction, the Lyons competed in seven events during the fall. Junior Rebecca Engell and sophomore Holly Valenzuela earned top team honors two times apiece to lead the way.

Mount Holyoke got its season started with a fifth place showing at the Smith College Invitational. Five members of the team placed in the top 50 overall. Engell completed the race in 21:47.59 to secure 20th place. She was followed closely by first year Julia Merton, whose time of 22:11.31 was good for 29th place.

Emily Follo led the way for the Lyons at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational. The sophomore collected 138th place with a time of 21:00. Valenzuela's time of 21:12 was good for 149th place. Mount Holyoke's seven runners posted an average time of 21:22 and were separated by just 48 seconds. Of the 42 team in the competition, the Lyons finished 27th.

After taking 10th place at the Williams College Invitational, Mount Holyoke finished 46th at the New England Cross Country Championship. The team added a sixth place result in front of their home crowd at the Seven Sisters Championship.

With Merton leading the way, the Lyons placed ninth at the NEWMAC Championship. The rookie took home 46th place overall with a time of 21:38. Valenzuela chipped in with a 57th place result, crossing the line in 22:02.

Mount Holyoke posted 28th place in its season finale at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship. Valenzuela led the Lyons with a time of 24:36, which was good for 107th place overall. Junior Hannah DiCocco posted a 140th place result, while Merton nabbed 166th place.
