NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team received goals scored by sophomore Linnea Alsted and senior Sophia Guziewicz, but it wasn't enough to keep host Salve Regina University from posting a 5-2 NEWMAC victory on Saturday afternoon.
Graduate student Shannon Kennedy scored five minutes into the contest, and the Seahawks (11-3, 4-2 NEWMAC) went on to seize a 3-0 lead after one quarter.
Alsted (Crownsville, Md.) sent the ball in high immediately following a penalty corner by the Lyons, for her seventh goal of the year.
Salve Regina added a goal by Georgia Costello to take a 4-1 lead at the half, and the Seahawks extended the lead to 5-1 as Julia Decker scored from Costello midway through the third quarter.
Guziewicz (Claremont, N.H.) netted her team-high and career-high 11th goal with 4:24 remaining in the third quarter, as she knocked in the rebound on a penalty corner play after Alsted's initial shot was saved by Seahawks goalie Bryn Protheroe.
Guziewicz's 11 goals are the most by a Mount Holyoke player since Diana Banmann scored 15 times in 2013.
Salve Regina outshot Mount Holyoke 23-12 and had a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Protheroe made six saves in goal for Salve Regina. Mount Holyoke senior captain Rachel Katzenberg (Reisterstown, Md.) made 10 saves in 40 minutes of action, and junior Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) added two saves in 20 shutout minutes.
Mount Holyoke will next host No. 15 nationally ranked MIT Tuesday at 7pm.
