GORHAM, Maine -- The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team took a tough-luck loss at the University of Southern Maine to open the 2025 season on Saturday, with the host Huskies prevailing 2-0 behind Eleanor Folsom's 13 saves.
The Lyons (0-1) outshot the Huskies (1-1) 16-10,including 8-2 in the second quarter, and had a 15-5 advantage in penalty corners, including 7-1 in the second quarter.
In a hard-fought, evenly played game, Mount Holyoke pressed the hosts for all 60 minutes, forcing two last corners in the final seconds.
USM denied all 15 shots on goal by Mount Holyoke, including two defensive saves by Boudreau.
Junior Diane Lee (Boston, Mass.) put all of her team-high five shots on goal for Mount Holyoke, and junior Linnea Alsted (Crownsville, Md.) had three more shots on goal. Sophomore Aarya Phadnis (Mountain View, Calif.) put three of her four shots on the cage.
Senior Ainsley Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) made six saves in her first career start in goal for the Lyons.
Mount Holyoke stays in Maine to play at Thomas College in Waterville on Sunday at 12pm.
