NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Senior goalie Ainsley Gruener had 14 saves and junior defender Linnea Alsted added two defensive saves, but it wasn't enough for the Mount Holyoke field hockey team to overcome Smith College as the host Bears defeated the Lyons 3-0 on Tuesday.
Smith (8-8, 3-5 NEWMAC) snapped a four-game losing streak and won its fourth straight against Mount Holyoke (4-10, 0-7 NEWMAC), to move a game ahead of the Lyons in the rivals' all-time series at 31-30-2.
Callahan Day scored her 12th goal of the season in the game's third minute. Gemma Polino and Annika Peterson added scores in the third quarter for the Bears.
Smith had advantages of 23-6 and 11-2 in shots and penalty corners, respectively.
Gruener (Topsfield, Mass.) had her third straight game with double-digit saves, and ranks sixth in the NEWMAC in save percentage (.771). Alsted (Crownsville, Md.) increased her league-leading number of defensive saves to 12.
Sophomore MJ Owens (Fairfield, Conn.) and first-year Rory Bernardo (Oaklyn, N.J.) had two apiece of Mount Holyoke's five shots on goal in the game.
The Lyons will celebrate Senior Day and look for a conference win against Clark University this Saturday at 1pm.
