Riding Named Reserve Champion at Nationals
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 6, 2007) - The Mount Holyoke College Riding team was named Reserve National Champion at this past weekend's Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championships hosted at the Eastern States Exposition at the Big E in West Springfield. The Lyons shared the honor with the University of Findlay as both teams totaled 25 points on the weekend. Virginia Intermont, perennial equestrian powerhouse, was named the 2007 National Champion, tallying an impressive 37 points. Brown University took third place with 23 points.
Senior Captain Nathalie Cooper took first place in both of her team classes, open flat and open fences, while Emily Color was named reserve champion in the Walk-Trot-Canter class. Dani Corkill, Christine Gunn, and Katie Miller each earned fifth place honors in their respective classes for the team competition to help the Lyons earn Reserve Champion status.
In the individual competition, senior Christine Gunn took second place in the intermediate fences class, garnering reserve champion honors. Marie Hilliard placed a respectable seventh in the novice fences class. In the Cacchione Cup Class, Nathalie Cooper led the competitors after both the open flat and open fences rounds. Cooper finished in third place overall among the top 30 riders in the country. Cooper also earned third place in the individual open flat class and sixth in the open fences event.
