SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 29, 2008) - Led by first year forward Shara Robertson, the Mount Holyoke College women's field hockey team overpowered non-conference foe Elms College 16-1 this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. The Lyons shattered five school records in the contest and improved their record to 15-0 all-time versus the Blazers.
Mount Holyoke established new program highs for goals in a game (16), assists in a game (11), points in a game (43), goals in the first half (6) and goals in the second half (10).
Robertson highlighted the offensive attack for the Lyons, racking up nine points on four goals and an assist. Her point and goal totals both tied previous school records held by Bridget Gunn and Krista Lindquist, respectively.
Twelve players recorded points and ten posted goals for Mount Holyoke, which notched its fourth win in a row. Senior midfielder Anne Doton found the cage three times and assisted on two others, while junior midfielder Peggy Wefald added two goals and pair of helpers.
First years Jess Fajardo, Kirsti Wiemokly, Tricia Chase, Kiki Boyles and Maddy Starbranch, along with sophomore Meredith Spencer-Blaetz and junior Mary Kate Switchenko chipped in with one goal apiece for the hosts.
Elms lone goal was scored by junior Danielle Gero late in the opening frame.
Mount Holyoke piled up large advantages in both shots (43-4) and penalty corners (17-7).
Junior goalkeeper Allie Walsh got the start for the Lyons and played the first half before giving way to first year Katie Gibson. Neither player made a save. At the other end, senior Katelyn Wasgatt turned away 16 shots for the Blazers.
Mount Holyoke (5-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) will kick off a two match road trip at Amherst College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Elms (1-7, 0-2 NECC) will also be in action again on Wednesday, hosting Wheelock College in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) clash beginning at 3:30 p.m. It will be the first of three straight home contests for the Blazers.
