Field Hockey Stymies Clark, 2-0
WORCESTER, Mass. (Oct. 21, 2008) - Led by senior midfielder Anne Doton, the Mount Holyoke College women's field hockey team picked up a 2-0 victory over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action this evening at Granger Field. With their second straight win over the Cougars, the Lyons snapped a three match losing slide.
The contest went scoreless until the 34th minute, when junior Mary Kate Switchenko found the cage off an assist from Doton. Following a penalty corner opportunity, Doton sent a pass from the top of the circle to Switchenko, who fired a shot from the right side past Cougars junior goalkeeper Kathryn Dawsey. The forward's ninth tally of the season proved to be the match winner. It was her second winner of the season and fifth of her career.
Clark's best scoring chances came early in the second half. The first came in the 41st minute, when Doton came up with a defensive save on junior defender Carley Corkum's attempt from just in front. Ten minutes later, the Cougars were awarded a penalty corner, but first year goalkeeper Katie Gibson kicked away a shot by first year Erin Murphy.
Mount Holyoke put things away in the 68th minute, when Doton tipped in a shot near the left post for her sixth goal of the fall. The Lyons second goal of the day came off of a penalty corner set. First year forward Shara Robertson was credited with the assist on the play.
Gibson stopped four shots en route to her first collegiate win for the Lyons. It was also her first career shutout. Dawsey collected five saves for Clark (5-9, 1-5 NEWMAC).
Mount Holyoke (7-6, 3-4 NEWMAC) will return to action again on Thursday, when it hosts Wesleyan University for a non-conference clash beginning at 7:00 p.m.
