Wellesley Ousts Mount Holyoke, 4-1
WELLESLEY, Mass. (Nov. 1, 2008) - The third seeded Wellesley College field hockey team picked up a 4-1 triumph over sixth seeded Mount Holyoke College this afternoon in the Quarterfinal Round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament. With the win, the Blue secured a spot in next weekend's NEWMAC Semifinals.
Wellesley will take on second seeded Wheaton College in the Semifinals next Saturday. The match will take place at Springfield College beginning at 2:30 p.m. Springfield will also host the Conference Championship on Sunday. Mount Holyoke closed out its season with a record of 9-7. The Lyons went 4-4 in league play.
Mount Holyoke opened strong, taking the first six shots of the contest, but Wellesley goalkeeper Emily Hewitt totaled three saves in the first 12 minutes to keep things scoreless.
Callie Lekas scored off an assist from Kate Cushing in the 23rd minute to put Wellesley in front 1-0. The first goal of the day came off of a penalty corner set. Sally Scudder extended the hosts advantage to 2-0, as she scored off of a rebound with eight seconds to play in the opening half.
Wellesley's cushion grew to 3-0 just four minutes into the second stanza, when Scudder took a pass from Katie Frett and found the back of the cage for her second tally of the match and 11th of the season.
A goal by Lekas in the 67th minute gave the Blue a 4-0 edge. Frett was credited with the assist on the play. It was the 12th marker of the season for Lekas.
Mount Holyoke got on the board just over one minute later when junior forward Mary Kate Switchenko scored off an assist from senior midfielder Anne Doton to slice the deficit to 4-1. From there, the contest went scoreless.
First year goalkeeper Katie Gibson made four saves for the Lyons, while Hewitt came up with six stops for Wellesley.
