Mount Holyoke Hosts MIAA Field Hockey Tournament

Mount Holyoke College served as the host for the 2008 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Field Hockey West Division Sectional Tournaments last week. Western Massachusetts Championships for Divisions I and II took place at the Turf Field on Saturday. They were preceded by semifinal contests for both divisions, which occurred on Wednesday and Thursday. Mount Holyoke will also host State Tournament Semifinal matches for Divisions I and II this coming Wednesday (11/12).
In the Division I title match, second seeded Agawam High School upset top seeded Longmeadow High School 2-1. Agawam advanced to the Championship with a 2-0 win over third seeded Westfield High School. On the other side of the bracket, Longmeadow blanked fifth seeded Amherst Regional High School 3-0. Both Division I Semifinal tilts were played on Thursday.
The Division II Championship also featured the top two seeds with second seeded Mohawk Trail Regional High School facing off against top seeded Greenfield High School. Mohawk came away with a 2-1 triumph. In the semifinal matches on Wednesday, Greenfield knocked off fourth seeded Smith Academy 3-1, and Mohawk picked up a 4-0 win over third seeded South Hadley High School.
As a result of their Western Massachusetts Championships, both Agawam and Mohawk Regional have advanced to the Massachusetts State Tournament, which will also take place at Mount Holyoke on Wednesday (11/12). Both squads will face off against Central Massachusetts Champions. Agawam will take on the Notre Dame Academy in the Division I contest at 7:00 p.m. In the Division II tilt, Mohawk will meet up with Quaboag Regional High School at 5:00 p.m. The winners of those two games will advance to Saturday's State Championships at Worcester State College.
