Wesleyan Knocks off Mount Holyoke, 73-37

WALTHAM, Mass. (Nov. 17, 2007) - For the second day in a row, the Mount Holyoke College women's basketball team suffered a setback at the Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament. Today, the Lyons fell to Wesleyan University by a score of 73-37 in the competition's consolation game at Auerbach Arena. Kenyon College knocked off the host Judges 67-62 in the Championship tilt.

Junior guard Ali Fourney (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) racked up 17 points, six assists, five rebounds, four blocks and four steals to pace the Cardinals. Wesleyan also received solid production from senior forward Lucy Sprung (Wilmington, Vt./Wilmington Middle), who recorded seven points and a team-best six boards. Junior forward Meredith Lowe (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior guard Stephanie Savas (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) added nine points apiece for the Cardinals.

Sophomore Jess Olson (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) turned in her second double-double in as many days for the Lyons, finishing with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. The forward collected All-Tournament honors as a result of her two-day effort. Junior guard Katie Austen (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) tallied six points and three assists, while first year forward Avery Gardner (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) netted five points off the bench for Mount Holyoke.

Wesleyan never trailed in the contest. A layup by Mount Holyoke sophomore center Kate Shafir (Newton, Mass./Beaver Country Day) made the score 6-4, but the Cardinals exploded for 16 points in a row to open up a 22-6 cushion at the 9:57 mark of the opening frame. They took a 41-20 advantage into the locker room and never looked back. Wesleyan's 36 points lead at the final buzzer was its largest of the afternoon.

Mount Holyoke (0-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) will kick off its home slate on Tuesday, when its hosts non-conference foe Amherst College at 7:00 p.m.
