Nichols Upends Basketball, 75-57
DUDLEY, Mass. (Dec. 4, 2007) - Three players reached double digits in the scoring column, as the Nichols College women's basketball team cruised to a 75-57 victory over visiting Mount Holyoke College this evening in non-conference action at the Nichols Athletic Center.Nichols took a 39-29 edge into the break and led by as many as 27 points in the second half. The Bison improved their season record to 4-2 with the win. Mount Holyoke dropped to 1-6.
The hosts were paced by their starting backcourt, which combined for 28 points, 13 assists and 14 steals. Senior Kristina Weasel (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingston) and sophomore Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, Conn./Bridgeport) netted 12 points apiece, while junior MaryLynn Skarzenski (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) posted game-highs of nine assists and ten steals. Nichols also received a boost from sophomore center Margaret Lilly (Ashfield, Mass./Mohawk Trail), who tallied ten points. Classmate Lyndsey Bennet (North Brookfield, Mass./North Brookfield) came off the bench to score nine points on three three-pointers.
Sophomore forward Jess Olson (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) led the way for Mount Holyoke, totaling 15 points and a game-best 15 rebounds. It was her sixth double-double of the season and 12th of her career. Senior forward Marisa Barone (Ludlow, Mass./Wilbraham Monson) also played well for the Lyons, recording a game-high 16 points to go with eight boards.
Mount Holyoke (1-6, 0-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Thursday, when it hosts Eastern Connecticut State University for a non-league tilt beginning at 7:00 p.m.
