Lacrosse Finishes 1-1 on the First Day of the Seven Sisters Championship

WELLESLEY, Mass. (March 24, 2007) - Mount Holyoke finished 1-1 in the first day of action at the Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Wellesley College. The 1-1 record brings the Lyons to a 2-2 overall mark on the season.

Game #1 MHC 7, Vassar 18

Vassar used a strong first half, taking a 10-2 lead, to overpower Mount Holyoke College 18-7 in a first-round game at the Seven Sisters Championship. The win pits Vassar against Swarthmore in the semi-finals, which will be played at MacDowell Field at Babson College at 7:30 this evening (directions). Mount Holyoke drops to the consolation , pitted against Cedar Crest College.

Megan Wefald (Granger, Ind.) led Mount Holyoke, with five goals, while Kristin Cody (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Danielle Babcock (Lexington, Mass.) added one goal each. Goalkeeper Lisa Roberts (Yarmouth, Maine) tallied 17 saves in the loss. Vassar was led by Ali Fantl (West Hartford, Conn.) and Christine Castellan (Media, Pa.) with five goals a piece, while Katama Martellucci (Montclare, Pa.) chipped in four. Fantl and Martellucci also had three assists each. Goalie Ariel Nelson (Greenlawn, N.Y.) had 12 saves.

Game #2 MHC 19, Cedar Crest 8

Mount Holyoke scored three goals in the opening three minutes of the game as they built a commanding 12-4 first-half lead to defeat Cedar Crest 19-8. Mount Holyoke advances to tomorrow's 5th-place match, facing off against Haverford at 9:00 a.m. at Wellesley College. Cedar Crest moves to the 7th-place game against Bryn Mawr at 9:00 a.m. at MacDowell Field at Babson College.

Danielle Babcock (Lexington, Mass.) added four goals and two assists, while goalkeeper Lisa Roberts (Yarmouth, Maine) tallied 21 saves in the win. Kirsten Gustafson (Winstead, Conn.) led Cedar Crest with five goals. Goalie Devin Ursini (Downington, Pa.) had 10 saves.
