Babson Subdues Lacrosse, 15-4

BABSON PARK, Mass. (April 14, 2007)- 17th ranked Babson defeated visiting Mount Holyoke College, 15-4, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at MacDowell Field Saturday afternoon. This brings the Lyons' record to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in the NEWMAC, while Babson advances to 10-2 overall, 4-0 NEWMAC.

Babson's well-balanced attack was on full display in the first half, as five different players scored the team's first five goals of the contest. Junior Katie Boshko (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Lindsay Bucci (Medford, Mass.) scored just 19 seconds apart to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game, and senior tri-captain Ashley Platt (Centerville, Mass.) struck at 23:08 to make it 3-0. Mount Holyoke got a goal back when junior Danielle Babcock (Lexington, Mass.) scored with 20:34 remaining, but sophomore Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, Mass.) answered at the 18-minute mark to push Babson's advantage to 4-1.

Mount Holyoke managed to tack on another goal by first-year Megan Wefald (Granger, Ind.) with 16:12 remaining, and the Lyons' defense did a solid job of holding the Beavers at bay for the next eight minutes. However, Babson finally broke the game open with three straight scores in the final 8:18 of the half, including two straight by junior Anita Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) and another by Bucci to give the home team a 7-2 cushion heading into the break.

First-year Kristin Cody (Old Lyme, Conn.) tallied an unassisted goal for Mount Holyoke less then two minutes into the second stanza, but the Beavers responded by scoring four straight and eight of the next nine goals to run away with the 15-4 victory. Godfrey and Bucci each scored twice in the half, while Martignetti added her third of the contest. The Beavers also received scores from first-year Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.), first-year Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass.), and sophomore Melissa Martin (Andover, Mass.), while senior tri-captain and defensive standout Keri Barrett (North Andover, Mass.) switched to attack late in the game and scored the first goal of her collegiate career.

Godfrey led all players with three goals and two assists for five points, while Martignetti and Bucci also recorded hat tricks. Senior tri-captain Jennie Williams finished with three saves in net for the Beavers, while Platt picked up a team-high four groundballs to go along with two draws and two caused turnovers.

Wefald paced Mount Holyoke with two goals and four draw controls, while first-year goalie Mimi Henry (Concord, Mass.) went the distance in net, making 10 saves.
