Lacrosse Can't Hold On Against Smith
EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (April 17, 2007) - Smith pulled out the victory over Mount Holyoke in Tuesday night's intense NEWMAC rivalry match. Tied at eight goals a piece with eight and a half minutes to play, Smith managed to place three in the back of the net to secure an 11-9 victory over the Lyons. This loss moves Mount Holyoke's overall record to 2-9 (0-4 NEWMAC) and improves Smith's record to 4-7 overall (1-4 NEWMAC).
The Lyons started off strong with a free position goal from first year Peggy Wefald (Granger, Ind.) six minutes into play. Sarah Barksdale '07 (Baltimore, Md.) answered back quickly for the Pioneers scoring two goals getting Smith on the board. Danielle Babcock '08 (Lexington, Mass.), Emily Fontaine '09 (Bolton, Mass.), and Lisa Roberts '07 (Yarmouth, Maine) each netted a goal for the Lyons in the first half with assists from Rachel Kurzweil '10 (Shavertown, Pa.) and Mimi Blumenfeld '10 (Berkeley, Calif.). The lead changed hands four times during the first period of play and the teams headed into half time with the Lyons up a score of 5-4.
Mount Holyoke struck first in second period play with another free position goal by Wefald; however, Smith also came out hard in the second half with three goals apiece from sophomore Emily Riff (Wayzata, Minn.) and freshman Rebecca Capute (Easton, Md.). The Pioneers took an eight to six lead 46 minutes into play, but Wefald kept the Lyons in the game with two more goals to tie the score at eight all. Capute, Riff, and Michelle Walsh '10 (Northampton, Mass.) each scored an additional goal to give Smith 11 points. Roberts posted the final goal for the Lyons which was not enough to pull out the win.
