Soccer Bounced By Wellesley in NEWMAC Quarterfinals, 3-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Oct. 31, 2009) – Led by sophomore midfielder Meredith Roy and first year midfielder Chelsea Ann-Patry, the top seeded Wellesley College women’s soccer team downed eighth seeded Mount Holyoke College 3-1 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Quarterfinal Round contest this afternoon. With the win, the Blue secured a spot in next Saturday’s Conference Semifinals.

The Lyons closed out their 2009 campaign with an overall record of 4-12-1. They went 3-5-1 versus NEWMAC foes.

Wellesley opened scoring in the 11th minute, when Roy scored off an assist from senior midfielder Catherine Caruso, who blocked a Mount Holyoke clear attempt to gain possession. Four minutes later, Roy set up Patry to put the Blue in front 2-0.

Refusing to go away, the Lyons sliced the deficit to 2-1 in the 67th minute on a goal by sophomore midfielder Mary Cooke. Senior midfielder Perry Markell was credited with the assist on the play.

First year Jennifer Marble then used a feed from Patry in the 85th minute to put things out of reach.

Wellesley finished with advantages in both shots (25-9) and corner kick chances (8-1). Senior goalkeeper Katie Martore made five saves for the hosts. Meanwhile, first year Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir turned away five shots for the Lyons.
