Brown Takes Down Squash, 6-3
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 22, 2008) - Despite victories from its top three players, the Mount Holyoke College women's squash team suffered a 6-3 setback versus Brown University this afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. It was the Lyons second loss of the 2007-08 campaign. With the win, Brown improved to 2-4 on the year. Mount Holyoke dropped to 7-2.Leading the way for Mount Holyoke was junior Pamela Anckermann (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Monte Alto), who wasted no time in defeating Megan Cerullo 3-0 at the number one slot. Anckermann has gone undefeated in three chances thus far this season.
Also finding the win column for the Lyons were first year Vidushi Gurunada (Colombo, Sri Lanka/Lyceum Int'l School) and junior Menusha Hettiarachchi (Colombo, Sri Lanka/Holy Family Convent). Gurunada faced off against Laura Pyne in the number matchup. After splitting the first two games, she took the next two to seal things. Meanwhile, Hettiarachchi breezed past Charlotte Steele 3-0 in her number three contest. Both players have captured six straight wins and own 8-1 records.
The remaining six matches were won by Brown. All six contests resulted in shutouts.
Mount Holyoke (7-2) will return to action this weekend, when it hosts the Mount Holyoke/Smith College Invitational from Friday through Sunday. The Lyons will open things up versus Colgate University on Friday at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, they will take on Colby College at 11:00 a.m. and Hamilton College at 3:30 p.m. They will round things out on Sunday with contests versus Northeastern University at 10:00 a.m. and Wesleyan University at 11:30 a.m.
