SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 25, 2008) - The 2008 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Tennis Tournament opened with a pair of Quarterfinal Round contests today on the campus of Mount Holyoke College. In one match, third seeded Wheaton College downed sixth seeded Smith College 5-0. On the other side of the bracket, fourth seeded Babson College defeated Mount Holyoke 5-1.
By way of their wins today, both Wheaton and Babson have secured spots in tomorrow's NEWMAC Semifinals. Wheaton will face off against second seeded MIT in one semifinal, while Babson will take on top seeded Wellesley College in the other. Both contests will take place at Mount Holyoke at 9:30 a.m. The winners will advance to the NEWMAC Championship, which will also take place at Mount Holyoke tomorrow. That contest is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. MIT and Wellesley both earned first round byes.
#3 Wheaton College def. #6 Smith College, 5-0
Wheaton cruised to a 5-0 triumph over Smith in one Quarterfinal Round match. Leading the way were sophomores Sarah Geocaris and Ellen Van Faasen, who each found the win column in both singles and doubles.
The Lyons swept the doubles matches to gain the early lead. In the number one contest, Geocaris and classmate Catherine Teague topped sophomore Diana Fiumefreddo and first year Clair Oblamski 8-3.
First year Allesandra DiOrio and junior Katherine Knies topped first years Jaimi Inskeep and Gianna Teague 8-1 at the second slot, while Van Faasen and senior Mallory Farmer edged sophomores Nawal Mays and Margaret Steiner 8-5.
Wheaton then sealed things with two singles wins. Geocaris upended Fiumefreddo 6-3, 6-0 in the number one matchup. Meanwhile, Van Faasen breezed past sophomore Nicole Anderson at the number four spot. The remaining singles contests went unfinished.
#4 Babson College def. #5 Mount Holyoke College, 5-1
Babson collected a 5-1 triumph over Mount Holyoke in the day's other Quarterfinal Round contest. Junior Jessica Huang and senior Heather Walsh found the win column two times apiece to pace the Beavers. They each grabbed both singles and doubles points.
Huang and senior Kali Hogan got things going with an 8-2 triumph over juniors Sarah London and Beatrix Hartmann at the number two doubles position. Walsh teamed with classmate Courtney Farrell at the number one doubles spot. The duo narrowly defeated senior Ashley Fallon and sophomore Elise Marifian 8-6.
Junior Liz Sheerin and first year Rebecca Stone then clipped sophomore Natalie Hsiang and first year Heather Richardson 9-8 (7-4) in the number three contest to complete the doubles sweep for Babson.
The Beavers put things away with a pair of singles triumphs. Huang downed Marifian 6-2, 6-2 in the number two matchup, and Walsh topped Hsiang 6-4, 6-1 in the number three contest. The Lyons lone victory of the day came from Hartmann, who took care of first year Ashley Lake at the sixth slot. All the remaining matches went unfinished.
