Tennis Edged by Simmons, 5-4
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 3, 2012) – Senior Nahrhee Han battled to the very end, but could not pull out the victory, falling in the third set as Mount Holyoke College dropped a 5-4 decision to Simmons College on Monday evening. The Lyons move to 1-1 overall, while the Sharks improve to 1-1 with the victory.
Han (Albertson, N.Y./Herricks) gutted out a tough match against Simmons junior Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.), falling 7-6 (8-6) in the first set before posting a 6-4 victory of her own in the second set, which was moved indoors due to darkness. Yet it was Teague who prevailed in the third set, pulling out a 6-1 win to give Simmons the 5-4 victory.
The Sharks came out firing to open the doubles action, taking two of three for the advantage heading into singles. Mount Holyoke's third flight duo of first year Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School) and senior My-Linh Nguyen (Potomac, Md./Richard Montgomery) earned the Lyons' lone point in the opening with an 8-5 victory.
In the singles action, Holloschutz continued to shine, posting a 6-3. 6-2 win over Simmons first year Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) in the sixth flight. The Lyons went on to claim the fourth and fifth flights as well with juniors Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School) and Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) each recording victories.
Simmons retaliated to make it an even match as first year Meghan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) volleyed past Lyons sophomore Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) by a 6-3, 6-3 margin in the third flight. The Sharks then tied things up when senior Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) defeated MHC junior captain AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa./Harrisburg Academy), 6-4, 6-4 in the second flight.
The Lyons (1-0; 0-0 NEWMAC) return to the court on Monday when they face Simmons College at the MHC Tennis Courts at 4:30pm. The squad will then open NEWMAC play on Saturday, September 15 versus Wheaton College at 1pm. Simmons returns to action on Wednesday in a 3:30pm match at Babson.
