Indoor Track & Field Excels at Wesleyan
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (Jan. 26, 2008) - The Mount Holyoke College women's indoor track and field team posted superb results at today's non-scoring Wesleyan Invitational at the Wesleyan Bacon Field House. Senior Catherine Riffin (Weston, Mass./Weston) highlighted the day by establishing a new school record in the 5,000-meter run. Her time of 18:54.04 was good for second place overall in the event.The Lyons also received strong performances from senior captain Charisse Pickron (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) and sophomore Crystal Boateng. Pickron continued to improve in the shot put, grabbing fifth place with a toss of 9.84 meters. Meanwhile, Boateng qualified for the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships by posting a time of 1:03.86 in the 400-meter dash. She took fourth place in the race.
Eight members of Mount Holyoke's squad recorded personal records. The group was led by first year Senia Bachir-Abderahman and sophomore Jessica Brezicha (Olympia, Wash./Olympia). Bachir-Abderahman posted an eighth place result (12:08.93) in the 3,000-meter run, while Brezicha took sixth place (9.73) in the triple jump.
Senior Joan Meiners (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) notched a fifth place finish (3:16.63) in the 1,000-meter run, and sophomore Temitope Ojo grabbed 17th (1:34.55) in the 500-meter run. A pair of Lyons registered personal-bests in the 55-meter hurdles. They were Pickron (10.24) and classmate Caroline Gillaspie (Athens, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) (10.06). First year Daisy Kong completed the 1-mile run in 6:55.70, and sophomore Caitlin McDermott totaled 7.38 meters in the weight throw.
Mount Holyoke will return to action next Saturday, when it competes in the Tufts University Invitational.
