Indoor Track & Field Takes Eighth at Wheaton
NORTON, Mass. (Jan. 31, 2009) – The Mount Holyoke College women’s indoor track and field team grabbed eighth place at the Wheaton College Invitational today. Wheaton amassed 207 points to secure top honors at its home meet. Worcester State College (49) and Eastern Connecticut State University (47) rounded out the top three.
Mount Holyoke totaled 10 points. The Lyons finished behind Brandeis University (41), the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (34), Salem State College (21) and Wellesley College (15). They ended in a deadlock with Assumption College (10) and ahead of Lasell College (8), Mahattanville College (5) and Bridgewater State College (4).
For the third competition in a row, Mount Holyoke was paced by Miriam Larson-Koester. The first year established new personal bests in both the weight throw and the shot put. Her distance of 11.68 meters in the weight throw was good for fourth place overall. She then recorded a toss of 11.00 meters in the shot put to nab third place.
Classmate Holly Valenzuela took home 14th place with a time of 2:38.46 in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Caitlin Desautels also competed in the race, taking 20th place with a time of 2:47.18.
First year Artemis Sapountzi and junior Jessica Brezicha took 16th (32.58) and 17th (33.32) places in the 200-meter dash to round things out for the Lyons.
Mount Holyoke will return to action next Saturday, when it competes in Smith College’s Tartan Invitational at 10:00 a.m.
