Volleyball Falls at Coast Guard, 3-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. (Oct. 21, 2008) - First year Nicole Johnson tallied 11 kills to help the Coast Guard Academy women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-18) win over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College this evening. With their ninth straight victory over the Lyons, the Bears snapped a three match slide and remained perfect at home this season.

Coast Guard (11-12, 4-3 NEWMAC) received solid production from junior Carin Sweeney, who posted seven kills. Senior Nicole Gurr added six kills and three blocks, while sophomore Ashley Bullard collected 16 assists.

Mount Holyoke was paced by sophomore defensive specialist Rosa Marruffo, who amassed seven kills, three aces and seven digs. Classmate Kateryna Kuc dished out 20 assists from the setter position.

The Lyons (4-10, 0-7 NEWMAC) will return to action on Friday at 5:00 p.m., when they face off against Middlebury College in the opening round of the 2008 Hall of Fame Classic. A total of 16 teams are slated to take part in the tournament, which will conclude on Saturday. The teams will be broken into two brackets. Mount Holyoke will host the Silver Bracket, while the Gold Bracket will take place at Smith College. Each team will be guaranteed two matches.
