Smith Comes Back to Defeat Volleyball, 3-1Match Statistics
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 28, 2008) - Junior outside hitter Mikal Minarich amassed eight kills, three service aces and two blocks to boost the Smith College women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-6, 25-10, 25-14) victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Mount Holyoke College this evening at the Mildred Howard Gymnasium. It was the Pioneers 11th straight victory over the Lyons.
After dropping the first set 25-23, Smith rallied to win the next three. The Pioneers received solid production from senior opposite hitter Courtney Parker, who notched eight kills. Sophomore setter Lauren Martinez amassed 17 assists and three aces, while junior middle blocker Bethany Weiss added three kills and four aces. First year setter Courtney Faria finished with 11 digs to round things out for the guests.
Leading the way for Mount Holyoke was senior outside hitter Chelsea Tracy, who racked up eight kills, nine digs and five blocks. Sophomore defensive specialist Rosa Marruffo recorded 11 digs, while classmate Kateryna Kuc dished out 15 assists from the setter position. First year middle hitter Tyler Protano-Goodwin chipped in with five blocks.
Mount Holyoke (4-14, 0-8 NEWMAC) will round out its regular season slate on Saturday, when it hosts the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The NEWMAC clash is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. Smith (12-17, 5-3 NEWMAC) will return to action on Thursday, when travels to Eastern Connecticut State University for a non-conference tilt beginning at 7:00 p.m.
