Volleyball Falls to MIT, 3-0Match Statistics | Download Senior Day Insert
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Nov. 1, 2008) - The Massachusetts Institute of Technology women's volleyball team downed host Mount Holyoke College 3-0 (25-2, 25-12, 25-21) this afternoon at the Mildred Howard Gymnasium in the regular season finale for both New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) squads. It was the Engineers 13th straight victory over the Lyons.
Prior to the match, four Mount Holyoke seniors were recognized for their contributions to the program. Libero Kathryne Schwartz, outside hitter Chelsea Tracy, right side hitter Amanda Trask and middle blocker Brenna Shepherd were each honored during a Senior Day ceremony.
MIT was paced by senior defensive specialist Lindsay Hunting, who amassed 12 digs and seven service aces. Junior setter Cathy Melnikow tallied 18 assists and eight digs, while first year outside hitters Allison Hamilos and Kelly Schulte recorded ten and seven kills, respectively. Meanwhile, junior middle hitter Barden Cleeland accumulated eight kills.
Trask paced the Lyons with six kills and six digs. Shepherd finished with three kills, while Tracy chipped in with six digs and a pair of kills. Sophomore defensive specialist Rosa Marruffo collected six digs and two kills, while classmate Kateryna Kuc dished out 12 assists from the setter position.
Mount Holyoke closed out its 2008 campaign with an overall record of 4-15. The Lyons went winless in nine outings against league foes. MIT (20-15, 7-2) has clinched a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament. The Engineers will host a Quarterfinal Round contest on Tuesday against a yet to be determined opponent.
