SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- WPI maintained a 1-0 lead from the fourth through the 75th minute, then added a pair of late goals as the Engineers defeated the Mount Holyoke College soccer team 3-0 on Saturday, in the second NEWMAC game of the season for both teams.
WPI (6-2-2, 1-0-1 NEWMAC) got a key early goal off a set piece, as Jess English's corner kick found Tiziri Tizi-Ougdal at the back post for an open header into the goal and the game-opening score for the Engineers.
WPI scored a similar goal in the 76th minute to double its lead, when Caetlyn Embree's long free kick traveled over Mount Holyoke senior goalie Clarissa Govea's (Pico Rivera, Calif.) reach directly toward the left post, where Maeve Steckley's leaping volley secured the insurance goal.
The Engineers made it 3-0 with 4:05 left in the game, as Delaney Mohl's entry ball into the penalty area found Abigail Johnson dribbling at a defenseless Govea for the putaway and Johnson's fourth goal of the year.
WPI outshot Mount Holyoke by a 21-2 margin, including 14-0 in the second half, as WPI goalie Ayla Verheul earned the shutout with no saves.
Govea made 10 saves for the Lyons, and ranks third in the NEWMAC in save percentage (.872).
Mount Holyoke (1-3-3, 0-2-0 NEWMAC) travels to Wheaton College on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1pm.
