SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College soccer team seemed destined for a 0-0 tie with Coast Guard on Wednesday night, before the visiting Bears broke through with the winning goal with 2:50 remaining in the game.
Coast Guard (2-10-2, 1-5-0 NEWMAC) was scoreless on 31 shots in the game, until the deciding play. Bears forward Bianca McIntosh intercepted a Mount Holyoke goal kick, drove into the left side of the Lyons penalty area, and crossed to Ella Pottle for an open finish.
Coast Guard had a 32-13 advantage in shots for the game, and an outsized 17-1 edge in corner kicks, including a 10-1 difference in the second half.
In contrast to Saturday's similar result, a 1-0 loss to Babson in which the visiting Beavers scored on a late penalty kick, the Lyons didn't go without scoring chances in the game. Junior Evie Krieg (Frisco, Texas) and first-year Yalina Shah (Las Vegas, Nev.) both had time to attempt mid-range shots that in the first half, with two by Krieg going high and one by Shah saved by Coast Guard goalie Julia Little. In the second half, senior Anna Kennedy (Glendale, Wis.) lined up a shot from the left side of the penalty area that passed wide and high.
Govea made nine saves, raising their save percentage to .859, which ranks third in the NEWMAC. Little made three saves for Coast Guard.
The Lyons (1-7-3, 0-6-0 NEWMAC) will look to get in the winning column again Saturday at 1pm at Emerson.
