SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Clark University defeated the Mount Holyoke College women's soccer team 2-0 in NEWMAC action Wednesday night at the MHC Soccer Field, getting first-half goals from Solimar Rivera and Georgia Louis.
Clark's first goal came in the 10th minute, and started with a goal-line drive and a shot by Louis. Mount Holyoke senior captain Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) made the save, but the rebound came out to Selene Hammad in front of the goal. Hammad gave a short tap to Rivera, and Rivera redirected the ball into the net for her seventh goal of the season.
The Cougars doubled their lead in the 30th minute, on a similar play to the first, beginning with a left-side drive by Hammad and a cross to Louis. Louis's initial shot was kicked away by Mount Holyoke senior captain Ada Siepmann (Vlotho, Germany) for a team save, but the ball returned to Louis for a second chance that she didn't miss, scoring her eighth goal for a 2-0 lead for the visitors.
Mount Holyoke had another team save early in the second half, as Cassidy Hubbard's header off a Clark corner kick was bodied away by first-year Yalina Shah (Las Vegas, Nev.), who was defending the far post.
Clark had a 34-7 advantage in shots attempted, including 23-2 in the first half. Mount Holyoke came closer to even play in the second half and took five shots, with Clark goalie Ava Lepro making saves on attempts by senior captain Anna Kennedy (Glendale, Wis.) and Siepmann.
Govea made 13 saves in the loss, and leads the NEWMAC in save percentage at .868. Lepro made two saves in the shutout for Clark.
Mount Holyoke will play at MIT Saturday at 4:30pm.
