Strong effort by Lyons not enough to slow down Springfield

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College soccer team gave a great effort from beginning to end of their final home game on Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough to hold back visiting Springfield College from defeating the Lyons 3-0 in a NEWMAC game on the MHC Soccer Field.

Springfield (8-8, 7-3 NEWMAC) won its fourth straight game and clinched a top-four seed in the NEWMAC playoffs. The Pride defeated the Lyons (1-10-4, 0-9-1 NEWMAC) for the ninth straight meeting.

The Pride outshot the Lyons 36-14 and 15-6 in shots on goal, but did have to survive two would-be tying goals for Mount Holyoke. Springfield goalkeeper Mairead Marsden came out of the goal twice in the first half to stuff point-blank shots by junior Sage Hudson (Washington, D.C.) and Evie Krieg (Frisco, Texas) on two mini-breakaways.

Springfield scored first in the 13th minute, as Natalia Mottura's corner kick was headed in at the far post by Molly Baxter.

Kayla McGrath put Springfield up 2-0 in the 38th minute, as Olivia Beach drove into the penalty area and passed to the trailing McGrath, who slotted the ball perfectly in the narrow gap between senior goalie Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) and the right post.

McGrath scored again in the 70th minute, her second goal of the season, as she headed in a corner kick by Jessica Perry.

Govea finished with 12 saves, and Marsden had six saves in the shutout.

Mount Holyoke's senior class gave outstanding efforts in their final home game, including Govea, captain Anna Kennedy (Glendale, Wis.), captain Ada Siepmann (Vlotho, Germany), captain Dana Chateauneuf (Granby, Mass.), Taryn White (Alexandria, Va.), Annie Bethell (Baltimore, Md.), Emme Hackett (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Jessica Drent (Kapaa, Hawaii). Jane Harmon (Ashburnham, Mass.) missed the game due to injury.

Mount Holyoke finishes the season Saturday at noon at Wellesley. Springfield will host Clark Saturday at 1pm.
