BOSTON -- Tatum Cohen's goal in the 80th minute gave Emerson College an 1-0 victory over the visiting Mount Holyoke College soccer team on Saturday, dealing the Lyons their third 1-0 loss on a late goal in a span of eight days.
Through 79 minutes, Mount Holyoke (1-8-3, 0-7-0 NEWMAC) was tied 0-0 with its opponent, in spite of a significant disparity in shots, for the third straight game. But with 10:37 remaining in regulation, the host Lions got on the board, as Cohen's left-footed shot from just outside the 18 rolled inside the right post. Mount Holyoke senior goalie Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) seemed to be shielded from seeing the shot until it was halfway toward its final destination.
Emerson (7-3-4, 5-0-2 NEWMAC) remained undefeated and in second place in NEWMAC play, behind a 29-1 advantage in shots attempted and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
Govea had another massive effort in goal for Mount Holyoke with 14 saves and the single goal allowed. Govea's save percentage of .868 ranks third in the NEWMAC, just .004 behind the league leader.
Junior Sage Hudson (Washington, D.C.) took Mount Holyoke's only credited shot in the 15th minute, when she drove around an Emerson defender to clear a shooting lane, but Emerson goalie Hailey Forman made the reflexive save from short range to keep the Lyons scoreless.
Mount Holyoke will host Clark University on Wednesday at 7pm.
