Three Headed to NCAA Career in Sports Forum

Official NCAA Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has announced the participants for the 2013 Career in Sports Forum (CSF) and three Mount Holyoke College student-athletes have been selected to attend. Amber Legare, Allison Slysz and Lauren Williams will all represent the Lyons at the premier event, which will take place from June 8-11 in Indianapolis.

From the over 700 applications from all NCAA Division I, II and III institutions, the trio are among 300 student-athletes selected to participate in the four-day event. All three continue a proud tradition for Mount Holyoke, which sent several student-athletes to last year’s event as well.

Legare, a rising junior from Chicopee, Mass., is a three-sport student-athlete at Mount Holyoke majoring in Geology with a minor in Chemistry. A member of the soccer, basketball and outdoor track & field teams, she overcame a devastating injury at the end of her first year and returned to competition in the winter as a member of the basketball team.

The Chicopee Comprehensive High School graduate started all 24 games for the Lyons hoops team, averaging 11.6 points with a team-best 7.4 rebounds and 25 blocks. She also had 24 assists and 17 steals. Legare continued to compete during outdoor track & field where she was a member of a number of top-10 relay teams and also participated in several field events.

Hailing from Hatfield, Mass., Slysz is a rising junior and member of the field hockey and basketball teams. A Biology major and Sport Studies minor, she played in 17 games, including 16 starts for the field hockey program. During her sophomore campaign, Slysz led the team in defensive saves with five while adding a goal.

As a member of the basketball team, the former Smith Academy standout appeared in 14 games, making six starts while averaging 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. She added six assists and three steals during that time.

Williams, a rising senior from Kingston, Jamaica, is a member of the Lyons swimming & diving team. An English major with a minor in Journalism, Media and Public Discourse, she is a three-time Seven Sisters Champion in her career.

A graduate of the Baylor School (Tenn.), Williams posted sixth or better in three events at the 2013 NEWMAC Championships, which saw MHC go from 10th to fifth in the standings in just one season.

Hosted annually by the NCAA, the CSF brings together several hundred selected student-athletes to learn about careers in sports. The CSF works to dispel myths about careers in athletics, as well as, facilitate the opportunity to obtain industry trends and hot topics from current athletics professionals.

The CSF's objectives for the student-athletes in attendance include: 1. how their personal values intersect with career opportunities; 2. understand how behavioral styles impact individual effectiveness; 3. develop actionable plans for personal growth and development; 4. learn a realistic view of the roles of coach or administrator in collegiate athletics or conference offices, as well as, within sports law and the sports entertainment industry; 5. examine the viability of selecting coaching, athletics administration, sports law, sports media and entertainment, and/or officiating as a full-time or part-time career; and 6. network with key decision makers from member institutions, sports law, sports media and entertainment, and the NCAA.
