Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Feb. 18th

RIDING

The equestrian team is back in action on Saturday, when they compete at the UMass Horse Show.

SWIMMING & DIVING

The Lyons (7-3) had an outstanding effort at last weekend's NEWMAC Championships, finishing fifth overall. In total, Mount Holyoke saw 15 school records fall and two meet records set. Leading the way was first year Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.), who was named the conference's Rookie of the Year after winning two events (400-IM, 1650-Free), achieving to NCAA 'B' Cuts and shattering numerous school records.

MHC will now wait for the announcement of the selections to this year's NCAA Championships, which will be held in Texas. Selections will be revealed on March 6 and currently Pruden is among the nation's best in two events. The National Meet runs from March 20-23.

BASKETBALL

Mount Holyoke shouldered losses to Springfield (55-38) and Wheaton (64-52) to close out their season last week. Senior guard Angelica Pascual (Lawrence, Mass.), who finished her MHC career with 1,194 points - good for third all-time, had a game-best 21 points in the loss at Wheaton.  The Lyons finished with a 5-18 record, going 3-15 in NEWMAC play.

 

SQUASH

Mount Holyoke suffered a 5-4 loss to Drexel in the opening round of the CSA National Championships, but rebounded for wins over Wellesley (6-3) and Colby (5-4) to finish fifth overall in the Walker Cup (C Division) last weekend. The Lyons saw four players finish with perfect 3-0 records during the event, including senior captain Kathryn Brummer (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), who was also named the recipient of this year's Wetzel Award. The award is given annually to the best college senior player who learned to play squash in college.

The Lyons finished their season with an 11-9 record and will now wait for individual selections to be announced for the CSA Individual National Championships. That event will be held from March 1-3 at Trinity College.

TRACK & FIELD

The Lyons had a number of outstanding efforts last weekend at the New England Division III Championships. Leading the way was first year Camille Coklow (Chicago, Ill.), who finished second in the 55-meter dash and is currently among the top-10 in Division III in the event. Additionally, MHC's 4x200 and 4x800 relays qualified for the ECAC Championships.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on March 1-2 when it competes at the ECAC Championships, hosted at the NYC Armory.
