Lyons Tales: A Review and Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 3rd

SOCCER

The Lyons got off to an 0-0-1 start in their opening week, playing to a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Nichols.  Senior tri-captain Kiana Lussier (South Hadley, MA) scored the game-tying marker, putting one in at 39:05 to make it a 1-all game. Mount Holyoke is back in action this week beginning Thursday with a 6pm contest at home against Elms College.  The Lyons then travel to Colby-Sawyer for a 12:30pm game on Saturday.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team opened up its 2012 campaign in dramatic fashion, defeating Regis, 1-0 in overtime on Saturday. Senior Angelica Pascual (Lawrence, MA) lifted the Lyons to victory, scoring on a breakaway at 73:45. Mount Holyoke opens the home portion of its schedule with a pair of games this week. The Lyons welcome Nichols on Thursday (7pm) and Castleton State on Saturday (1pm).

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke posted a convincing win in its season-opener on Saturday, defeating the University of St. Joseph, 9-0. The Lyons dropped just three games in the entire match to the Blue Jays, led by straight set singles wins from AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, PA), Sarah Anischik (Tolland, CT), Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan), Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, VT) and Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, NJ).

The squad returns to the courts on Monday, hosting Simmons at Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts at 4:30pm.

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons take to the floor for the first time in 2012 on Saturday, hosting the University of St. Joseph and Amherst in a tri-match at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. Led by fifth-year head coach Sonnie Terrell, the Lyons will face St. Joseph at 11am, followed by St. Joseph versus Amherst at 1pm. Mount Holyoke rounds out the afternoon against Amherst at 3pm. Last season, the Lyons posted a 9-16 record with big wins over NEWMAC-rivals Coast Guard and Smith.

CROSS COUNTRY

Under the direction of second-year head coach Jennifer Adams, the cross country team opens its season on Saturday at the Smith College Invitational. Meet time is set for 11am. The squad returns 10 runners from last year’s team, which finished 27th overall at the NCAA Regional Championships.
