Lyons Tales: A Review and Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 24

SOCCER

Mount Holyoke went 1-1 last week, falling to Western New England (4-1) before defeating Coast Guard (2-0) in NEWMAC action. Sophomore Hannah Yee (Amherst, Mass.) was the offensive catalyst for the Lyons, scoring all three goals on the week. MHC (1-5-1; 1-1-0 NEWMAC) returns to the pitch on Tuesday with a 4pm match at Bay Path College. The Lyons then travel to conference-foe Wheaton for a 1pm contest on Saturday.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Lyons posted a victory in their only contest last week, a 4-0 win at Western New England. Sophomore Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) paced the offense, scoring a goal and assisting on two others in the win.  Mount Holyoke (4-2; 1-0 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday at Wesleyan for a 7pm match. The Lyons then return home on Saturday, hosting Wheaton at 1pm on the MHC Turf Field.

TENNIS

In their only match of the week, tennis fell 8-1 at MIT. First year Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) came away with the Lyons lone point, winning 7-5, 6-0 in sixth flight singles. The Lyons (2-2; 1-1 NEWMAC) return to the court this weekend at the ITA Regional Championships. Action at the tournament, which will be held at MIT, runs from Friday through Sunday.  

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons went 1-2 on the court last week, falling to WPI (3-0) and Connecticut College (3-0), while defeating Elms (3-0). First year Emma Sweeting (Hasting-on-Hudson, N.Y.) had a solid week for MHC, posting 23 kills, five service aces and 20 digs. Mount Holyoke (2-5; 1-2 NEWMAC) is back in action on Tuesday with a conference match at Babson at 7pm. The Lyons then travel on Saturday to Norwich University for a 1pm game.  

CROSS COUNTRY

Mount Holyoke was idle last week, but returns to the course this weekend at the Keene State College Invitational. Action begins at 11am.

GOLF

The Lyons hosted the 37th Annual Mount Holyoke Invitational last weekend. MHC finished 15th overall, paced by a fifth-place finish from sophomore Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif.), who shot a combined 155 during the two-day event. The Lyons are back on the links next weekend, participating in the Middlebury College Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

RIDING

The Lyons opened their 2012-13 season on Saturday at the Preseason Tournament of Champions, hosted by Goucher College in Baltimore, Md. Mount Holyoke came away with the victory at the tournament, besting 17 teams. Leading the way was junior Lexie Lohrer (Carlisle, Mass.), who won the Tournament of Champions Collegiate Medal after a flat, fences and testing phase. Riding returns to action on October 6 at the Smith College Horse Show, beginning at 10am.

CREW

The Lyons crew team opens its 2012 campaign this week, competing at the Head of the Riverfront Regatta. Action begins at 10am and will kick-off at Riverside Park in Hartford, Conn. Mount Holyoke, which is led by 22nd-year head coach Jeanne Friedman, looks to continue to build off its solid campaign last season as the squad finished third at the Seven Sisters Championship and were fifth in the Florence Jope Smith Cup point standings at the NEWMAC Championships.
