Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 15th

SOCCER

Mount Holyoke battled to a 1-1 tie in double-overtime against Connecticut College, but fell 1-0 against NEWMAC-rival, Wellesley. Senior Kiana Lussier (South Hadley, Mass.) tallied for the Lyons. MHC (2-9-2; 1-5-0 NEWMAC) is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts conference-foe Clark at 6pm. The Lyons then travel to Springfield on Saturday for a 2:30pm contest.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Lyons defeated Simmons, 3-0, behind two goals and an assist from sophomore Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.), but couldn’t repeat against Wellesley, falling 3-0. Mount Holyoke (6-6; 2-3 NEWMAC) returns to the field on Tuesday with a 7pm game at Clark. The Lyons then host Springfield on Saturday at 1pm. That game also marks Senior Day for the field hockey Class of 2013!

TENNIS

MHC defeated Smith, 9-0 last week before taking part in the 2012 New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament, hosted at both Mount Holyoke and Smith. The Lyons saw three teams advance to the second round, including the first pair of Nahrhee Han (Albertson, N.Y.) and AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa.), who dominated in the opening round. Additionally, Han was presented with the prestigious Lindsay Morehouse Award prior to the tournament.

The Lyons (4-3; 3-2 NEWMAC) are back on the court with critical conference games beginning Tuesday at 5pm at Springfield. MHC will then host Babson at 1pm on Saturday to conclude its regular season fall schedule.  

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons fell in three contests last week, but were led by junior Martina Kneifel (Oro Valley, Ariz.), who posted 26 kills, five service aces and 41 digs over the three-game stretch. Mount Holyoke (3-14; 0-6 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday with a NEWMAC game at the Coast Guard Academy at 7pm. The Lyons then host the 2012 Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

MHC faces Colby on Friday at 5pm, before squaring off against Bridgewater State (9am) and Westfield State (1pm) on Saturday. A total of 24 games will be played on the weekend with 12 taking place at Mount Holyoke and Smith hosting the other 12 contests.

CROSS COUNTRY

Mount Holyoke finished sixth overall at the Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Wellesley. The Lyons were led by first year Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho), who finished 14th in the 5k event. MHC is idle this week, but hits the course once again on October 27th at the NEWMAC Championship, hosted by Smith at 11am.

GOLF

The Lyons finished sixth of eight teams at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational, hosted by Wellesley last weekend. Sophomore Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif.) paced Mount Holyoke in the event, shooting a combined 152 – her lowest score of the season – to finish second overall. The Lyons concluded their fall season at the event.

RIDING

The Equestrian team made it three in a row last weekend, claiming victory again, this time at their own Mount Holyoke Horse Show. The Lyons had a number of solid efforts, including Jessica Murray (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who won both overall high point rider and novice high point rider. Three others also garnered high point honors at the meet. Mount Holyoke is back in action next weekend when it competes at the UMass Horse Show on Saturday at 10am.

CREW

The Lyons returned to the water last weekend at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta, hosted on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. Mount Holyoke had six boats compete at the event, led by a 10th place finish out of 48 by the first varsity eight boat. Mount Holyoke now turns its sights toward next weekend as it prepares to compete in the storied Head of the Charles Regatta.
